Until early seventies, the State was not only self sufficient in egg production, but also exported to other states. Backyard poultry rearing is the most popular method of rearing. Presently it is estimated that between 400-500 million eggs per year are imported from neighbouring states. But the poultry production has increased even though we couldnot meet the demand

Per capita consumption was 57 eggs per year in 1967 but it is 90 eggs in 1998 and the All India average is only 29 eggs. The per capita availability of poultry meat is 1.51 Kg/year/head while the All India average is only 0.30 kg/year/head.
