Goats

The climatic and managemental conditions prevailing in Kerala especially in the northern regions has resulted in the evolution of very resistant and adaptive dual purpose breed, Malabari. The daily average milk production is around 400ml.

Goat population in Kerala have shown continuous growth. 16 lakhs of goats are in the state (40 goats/sq.kms). AICRproject launched by ICAR is a major attempt to produce highly productive crossbreds of Malabari with exotic breeds as Alpine and Sannen.

There is heavy demand for chevon, the meat preferred by all sections of society. More than 45% of the goats in the state are slaughtered for meat. 75% of them are of below 1 year of age. Researchs and trials are done to produce meat breeds of goats with high feed conversion ratio.

Goat Development Programme
There are two farms under the department-
1.Goat Farm, Komeri, Kannur
2.Goat Farm, Attappadi, Palakkad Dist.
